Donne altrove. Viaggi, scrittura periodica e identità nell'Ottocento inglese
2015
The book focuses on the usage and publication of travelogues by 19th century women travellers to the colonies of the Empire as tools for spreading a new female identity based on courage, strenght, adventurous attitudes, in brief, based on all those features on which male identity had governed the economic, social, political and cultural areas, and last but not least, suffocated the so called 'fragile' gender. the travelogue, that is the writing of a a non fictional travel experience by women, to and in place such as the colonies, considered as the uncivilised and dangerous side of the Empire gave women the possibility to develop and perform their own selves as authoritative, mobile and powe…
2020
After a brief survey on the previous studies on the Sicilian domestic architecture of the hellenistic and Roman periods, this paper questions the idea of a continuous development of the Greek house's central space, from the simple court to the peristyle, as well as the opposition between “centripetal”and “axial” (i.e. the Greek peristyle house and the Roman atrium house). This rigid distinction doesn't take in account the existence of an hybrid form of the court that doesn't fit well in these comfortable cathegories: the “tetrastylon”. Sicilian houses are reconsidered in order to establish if this and other single houses' features can be labelled as “Punic”, “Greek” or “Roman” or if this is…
Multilayered cultural identity and the perception of the self
2012
This qualitative study examines the reciprocal relationship between a person’s multilayered cultural identity (MCI) and the concept of self (CoS), that is presented purely on a theoretical level and encompasses various theories. Nowadays, in an increasingly globalising world, it is not enough to merely look at a national, ethnic or other type of identity. It is important to realise that there are different layers in an identity that one can view themselves through. The ways an individual perceives themselves through their multicultural background can also be different. This thesis helps identify the ways a person can see themselves. The thesis also attempts to explain the varied nature of o…
The Influence of Cultural Competence on the Interpretations of Territorial Identities in European Capitals of Culture
2014
Abstract The EU’s cultural initiative ‘the European Capital of Culture’ (ECOC) includes high identity political aims. It requires the designated cities to introduce and foster local, regional, and European cultural identities. In addition, the cities have used the designation as an opportunity to promote national cultural identity. Audiences of the ECOC events recognize and interpret different kinds of representations of territorial cultural identities from what the cities have to offer in culture. However, the contents of these interpretations vary drastically in the ECOCs. The article discusses whether the competence of interpreting the representations of territorial cultural identities i…
2009
The persistent information on high levels of unemployment and premature abandon of school of roma students (with all the precautions with regard to undue generalizations, cases of full integration etc.) allow that the question of the right to a cultural identity turns out to be current, as well as its repercussion in areas as those of education and employment. This work analyzes the implication of the cultural difference, in the concrete case of the roma, taking into account the kind of economica inequality legitimized according to the meritocratic system wich informs the mentioned areas. It is dealing with a dissatisfaction judgement in human rights terms for the situation of a group wich …
2022
The proximity between craft and design has been identified as one of the many reasons for the success of what has been the Made in Italy phenomenon, and now the contemporary design scenario shows a strong tendency to contamination of skills from one discipline to the other. This paper offers a critical analysis of the evolution of this relationship to identify new cognitive tools to interpret and categorise the instances of hybrid design in the era of design when everybody designs.
2015
This essay deals with the «Biblioteca dell'Economista», the collection of translated economic texts by Francesco Ferrara. The article examines the role that the editorial series attaches to the French economists and their works. A particular attention is devoted to Ferrara's introductions of books in which the Sicilian scholar analyzes the life and the thought of the authors and compare them to his economic theory and idea of the economist's profession.
Dolci simboli
2021
2021
Eclecticism is a complex creative trend born as a consequence of both postmodernism and the heterodox treatment of cultural identity borders. This aesthetic path emerges as a compositional model of great communicative power in contemporary creation in the last two decades. Our essay addresses the Symphony V "American" (2003) by Leonardo Balada (1933) as a compositional paradigm. Through this article we demonstrate the importance of including popular sounds and re-signifying materials in the creative conception. A valid model of communication ahead of the challenges of globalization and mass media processes is therefore established hereby.
COLLEGAMENTI PER UN’IDENTITÀ CULTURALE COMUNE NEL BACINO DEL MEDITERRANEO
2021
